Akeneo and Pimcore are the ones we see most, but the approach applies to any PIM with an API. The work is about getting rich product content, attributes, and media out of the PIM and onto your storefront cleanly and on publish, which is a consistent problem regardless of which platform holds the data.
A PIM owns product content: descriptions, attributes, media, relationships, and localisations. An ERP owns commercial data: stock, pricing, and orders. They answer different questions, and a mature setup usually has both. We integrate them so the storefront gets rich, consistent content from the PIM and live stock and pricing from the ERP, without the two treading on each other.
If you have a large or complex catalogue, sell across several channels, or manage product content in multiple languages, a PIM saves a great deal of manual work and error. If your catalogue is small and lives happily in Shopify, you probably do not need one yet, and that is the advice you will get rather than a pitch for an integration you do not need.
