NetSuite eCommerce: SuiteCommerce vs a Custom B2B Ordering Portal (2026)

SuiteCommerce connects an eCommerce storefront to the products, pricing, customers and orders in NetSuite. It suits businesses whose customers can use its standard buying and account workflows.

Costs rise when dealers need different permissions for buyers and accounts staff, purchasing across branches, approval limits and specialised ordering screens. You can end up paying for substantial custom development alongside the platform subscription.

For these projects, we often recommend a custom B2B portal connected to NetSuite. You control the ordering experience and avoid the SuiteCommerce subscription. With a separate integration layer, you can also retain the portal if you change ERPs.

Where SuiteCommerce Fits

SuiteCommerce provides catalogue browsing, customer pricing, repeat orders and account self-service. How far you can adapt it depends on the product:

Product What it provides Constraints
SuiteCommerce A managed storefront with themes, configuration and extensions Changes must fit the available configuration and extension points
SuiteCommerce Advanced (SCA) Commerce functionality with deeper source-code access Custom changes need ongoing maintenance and migration when upgrading
SuiteCommerce MyAccount Invoice, transaction and account self-service, including limited reordering No full shopping and checkout experience for browsing and buying new products

Oracle documents the SuiteCommerce and SCA customisation options and MyAccount's scope.

Using the standard features can save development effort. Once you need NetSuite specialists to redesign most of the buying journey, you have a custom development project plus a platform subscription.

SuiteCommerce vs Custom: Costs

SuiteCommerce still needs implementation, design, customisation and testing. Partner Anchor Group estimates 150–250 hours for an out-of-the-box implementation in its cost guide.

Around A$85,000 is a mid-range budget for a custom NetSuite ordering portal MVP. That covers discovery, design, development, integration, testing and launch. More features or integrations increase the budget.

The SCA comparison starts at A$100,000 for implementation and A$5,000 per month for licensing. These are planning assumptions to replace with your partner's quote. The A$1,440 monthly maintenance allowance applies only to custom; SCA hosting is included in its subscription.

Cost, excluding GST Custom NetSuite portal SuiteCommerce Advanced budget scenario
Design, implementation and integration ~A$85,000 A$100,000+
Commerce platform subscription A$0 A$5,000/month
Maintenance allowance A$1,440/month A$0
Hosting allowance A$199/month Included
First year A$104,668 A$160,000+
Three years A$144,004 A$280,000+
Five years A$183,340 A$400,000+

At the A$100,000 SCA implementation baseline, custom costs A$135,996 less over three years and A$216,660 less over five years. The assumed SCA subscription alone adds up to A$300,000 over five years.

Even at A$2,500 per month, with A$100,000 implementation, SCA totals A$190,000 over three years and A$250,000 over five years: A$45,996 and A$66,660 above the custom example.

The model holds rates constant and includes 12 months of running costs in year one. Both columns exclude existing NetSuite ERP fees, transaction fees, extra API capacity, paid extensions and future features. Custom maintenance covers agreed upkeep; major upgrades and additional support are scoped separately for either option.

A standard SuiteCommerce deployment with little customisation could cost considerably less than this SCA example.

Keep Your Portal When You Change ERP

Leaving NetSuite entirely means replacing SuiteCommerce too. Its backend services depend on NetSuite records, as Oracle's architecture documentation describes. You cannot simply reconnect SuiteCommerce to another ERP.

A custom portal can keep ERP-specific code in a separate integration layer. When you change ERP, you can retain the customer interface, account permissions, ordering screens and approval workflows while rebuilding that connection.

The migration centres on mapping products, customers, pricing, stock and transactions to the new ERP, then testing affected business rules. Customers can continue using the portal they know, and you retain your investment in it.

Branch Access, Permissions and Approvals

Take a fictional dealer with three branches:

  • Bob buys for Brisbane. He can use that branch's pricing but cannot access invoices or change staff permissions.
  • Sally works in accounts. She can view invoices and make payments across the business but cannot place orders.
  • Jane manages all three branches. She can switch accounts, approve purchases and manage staff access.

Oracle documents one access role per customer record, alongside individual contact logins. Separating purchasing, finance and management access needs careful configuration around that model.

Anchor Group's Multi-Account Login extension allows switching between associated customer records. It requires contact-based access; customer-record logins cannot use it. Switching also needs to load the correct permissions, prices, cart, credit arrangements and invoices.

In a custom portal, we design these account relationships and permissions together. Each action is checked against the person's access and the correct NetSuite customer record.

Suppose Bob's order limit is A$2,000. The portal can hold his A$3,500 request for Jane, record her approval, recheck pricing and availability, then submit the order to NetSuite. Monthly budgets can account for previous purchases and pending requests. We can adjust those rules as customers' purchasing policies change.

Large Orders and Shared Carts

Oracle documents a soft limit of 100 unique cart items for SuiteCommerce and SCA. Above that level, adding items takes longer and Oracle does not guarantee that the order will complete. See Oracle's shopping-cart guidance.

SuiteCommerce applies one cart-sharing setting across the site: either a shared cart for each business or separate carts for its contacts. Supporting personal drafts alongside collaborative branch orders requires further work.

We can build a custom portal with spreadsheet uploads and branch order templates, then test large orders end to end against NetSuite. Invalid product codes or pack quantities are flagged on the affected line, so buyers can fix them without re-entering the order.

Dealer Pricing and GST

Oracle's Require Login for Pricing setting hides prices from normal logged-out browsing, but its documentation warns that certain underlying API URLs can still return pricing. Confidential dealer prices need access controls on the data itself.

In a custom portal, we check customer and branch permissions when retrieving prices, invoices and account information, including cached data.

Tax display can add implementation work too. Anchor Group lists 30 hours for its GST/VAT price extension, which switches tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive display by customer category. Requirements like this belong in the initial budget.

A custom ordering screen can present the dealer's price, GST treatment, pack quantity, stock indication and payment terms together.

Upgrades and Code Ownership

SuiteCommerce receives automatic managed-bundle updates. SCA requires manual migration to adopt new major or minor releases, as Oracle explains in Commerce Patches and Upgrades.

Budget for carrying forward and testing your custom ordering, permissions and checkout changes when you adopt a new release.

Custom software needs maintenance too, but you control the architecture and release schedule. We can prioritise improvements to ordering or invoice handling while maintaining the framework and ERP connection.

The contract should give you ownership of commissioned code, repository access, deployment documentation and a practical handover path.

Building a Reliable NetSuite Integration

A custom dealer portal can sit alongside your existing public website, with NetSuite holding the business records.

NetSuite's Standard-tier base allowance is five concurrent requests under the contract model introduced in June 2020; other tiers and extra licences change it. Covered web-service and RESTlet requests share account-level capacity, including requests from your other integrations.

We store suitable catalogue data locally, control price and stock refreshes, and queue work that can wait. This reduces avoidable calls to NetSuite while customers browse.

If NetSuite accepts an order but its confirmation is lost, the integration must recover the existing order without creating a duplicate. If NetSuite is unavailable, the portal should show the request as awaiting processing and let your team monitor recovery.

We built the NetSuite integration for FluidDrive, alongside production integrations with other ERP and accounting platforms.

Our B2B Portal Experience

We have worked on the East Coast Bullbars dealer portal since 2017. It connects to its ERP and includes customer pricing, sub-customer management, vehicle and part-number search, and approvals with editing and reminders. Our case study records $90 million in online orders.

For Impact Office Supplies, we have developed a custom B2B and B2C platform since 2018, connected to Options ERP. It supports contract pricing, purchasing approvals and corporate procurement. The case-study snapshot reports 3.4 million annual pageviews and a 33.5% B2B conversion rate.

When Custom Is the Better Investment

SuiteCommerce makes sense when its standard workflows fit and you can use most of its functionality with limited changes.

We favour custom when branch permissions, approvals, specialist ordering or account self-service require extensive development anyway. You can put that budget into a portal designed for your customers, with lower recurring platform costs and the ability to retain it through an ERP change.
